Bike Week

Mr Tumble Week
W/c 11th January 2016

What a fun week we had. The children brought in bikes, scooters and push along bikes to use during outdoor play. As well as taking part in fun outdoor activities we talked about bike riding being a good form of exercise, but also how to be safe.

Information for parents
Bike riding is lots of fun, but accidents can happen.

Helmet - make sure you seek professional advice when buying a bike helmet. Always wear a helmet that fits properly, never wear a hat under the bike helmet. A lot of the children told us they do not have a helmet! These can be bought from Argos, bike shops, toy shops. Please buy your child a bike helmet to wear to prevent head injuries.

Ride a bike that is the right size When your child is on his/her bike, ask them to stand straddling the top bar of the bike so that both feet are flat on the ground. There should be 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.6 centimeters) of space between your child and the top bar.

Be safe, Be seen - make sure your child wears bright clothes, also put reflectors on the bike to ensure they can be seen.  Avoid dressing them in baggy clothes and ensure suitable footwear is worn. (to avoid things getting caught up in the chain ie shoe laces, baggy pants)

Where to ride - Talk to your child about safe places to ride their bike ie the park (free from cars). Keep an eye out for wet leaves, big puddles, gravel, curbs as these are common obstacles that can cause falls.
